Around the same time last year, the Miami Heat were in a funk, yet this time it’s a six-game losing streak. With their offensive struggles being the main focus of fans since this losing streak began, as of recent defense has become the new cause of concern. Fortunately, the Heat now have something they haven’t had all season, a healthy roster (with the exception of Dru Smith). Now that the team is healthy, adjustments, rotations and new opportunities will be on Heat coach, Erik Spoelstra. A recent change we saw was Josh Richardson receiving his first DNP (Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision). Coach Spoelstra isn’t the only one having to make changes, much of the roster needs to improve overall production on both ends of the floor.
Starting this week, the Heat will be at home where they are 12-10 this season and are playing six of their next seven games. This week they’ll have matchups against the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards. Each of these teams are averaging over 115 points per game this season. On top of that, those four teams are shooting over 47% from the field as well. This leaves a small margin of error for the Heat, offense and defense, especially perimeter, will be vital for their success this week. Physicality and aggression on the boards as well as protecting the paint is a must for the Heat.
Improving on both sides of the floor is a major key going forward for the Heat. Yes, they have health on their side, but there's more that's needed. The team needs to develop chemistry with the addition of Terry Rozier. On the offensive end, Miami has to improve their rim pressure and get to the free throw line. This season the Heat are fourth in free throw percentage (82%). Those changes will help their fast break scoring and open their shooters for more open looks, especially in the second half where they are ranked 29th in second half scoring. This year the team is 18-7 when they score 110+ points.
Coach Spoelstra said the day before the Knicks game he doesn’t want the team to lean on the fact they are whole, it’s about playing up to their standards regardless of who is available. With Miami having a chance to get back on track, it will be up to Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler to lead by example and get the Heat back in the winning column.
